DOG BITES

Did you know that over 4 million people are bitten by dogs every year? Sadly, the Humane Society says that, of those victims, anywhere between 10 and 20 will die as a result of a dog bite, most of them being children! WHO WILL PAY FOR MY BILLS AND DAMAGES?

In many cases, the dog’s owner will have an insurance policy (or multiple policies) that may protect them for damages caused by their dogs. There are 2 major types of policies that dog owners purchase: (1) Homeowners/Renters Insurance and (2) Animal Insurance.

Homeowner’s/Renter’s Insurance
If the dog owner has purchased a homeowner’s or a renter’s insurance policy, that policy will protect the dog owner’s liability for your dog bite if the bite occurs on the owner’s insured property or premises or while the dog is under its owner’s control.

Animal Insurance
Some dog owners also have special insurance that helps protect them for injuries and damages caused by their dogs (and other animals). This is particularly true when the dog owner has had prior incidents involving a particular pet.

In order to find out whether your dog bite injury may be compensated by a dog owner’s insurance company, it is important to find out the name, address and phone number of the dog’s owner. Sometimes, the dog owner is willing to give you his/her insurance company’s contact information (don’t count on this) and if so, please have it ready for us when you call. If it turns out that the dog owner does not have insurance, you may still have legal rights against the owner to recover your damages.
